no kidding with library fines

Never thought you’d be booked for failing to return a library book?  Think again.

Police officers at Grafton, Wisconsin, actually handcuffed a woman at her home, and had her arrested, fingerprinted and photographed for ignoring the library’s calls and notices to appear in court.  * link to article below

The fine for the couple of overdue paperbacks […]

precious memorial of the dead?

  Diamonds, they say, are forever.
A recent innovation adds new meaning to this perception.  Grieving survivors of departed loved ones can now compress the ashes into diamonds.
The question, however, is what exactly are they, the survivors, to do with these diamonds?  String them around their necks? Or set them in rings?
Imagine them […]

schapelle corby’s field day

Is Schapelle Corby serving time in Bali’s prison, or is the Bali prison serving her?
She had a field day yesterday, indulging in what many of us would deem as luxury.  Most notably, a spa session.  At a resort!
How delightful.
She also shopped for clothes, and had her hair done.  Are they organizing a ball in the […]

obsession

43-year-old Darius McCollum is obsessed with New York City’s public transit system.
From the time he was 15, he had played the role of the helpful staff greeting commuters on their way.  He had taken initiative in clearing thrash from the tracks.  He had driven the buses and the trains. And he had helped put out […]

ancient cosmetic surgery

Ancient Egyptian women wore eye shadows and dyed their hair for beauty, just like modern women do.
Did they also resort to cosmetic surgery?
It is not a farfetched suggestion - scientists believe that the Egyptians were medically capable of such treatments back then.  Such beliefs are supported by ancient documentations that the Egyptians did fix broken […]

tara klamps

The Discovery Channel features a short film from Malaysia, which compares traditional community events for mass circumcision against no fuss procedures at medical clinics.
Thanks to a disposable circumcision clamp invented by a Malaysian doctor, parents of young Muslim boys increasingly favor getting it done at clinics.  Tara KLamps are supposed to make the experience less […]

instant hiding place

Need an instant hiding place?  Wear one.
Lady Japanese fashion designer Aya Tsukioka came up with the idea of a sheet of cloth that is a picture of a vending machine when spread open.
Simply whip it off your bag and hold it up to camouflage into the city till that sinister looking fellow goes away.

barcoded tombstones

Japanese employ IT very extensively – quite literally from womb to tomb.
Some memorial parks are offering barcoded tombstones.  Bereaved relatives simply scan these tombstones to view photos and information about the deceased that are logged in the structure.

not just nature and nurture

I  think of world class athletes as gifted people who undergo regimented and vigorous training by equally gifted coaches.
So it amazes me that ‘little things’ like sports attire make split second differences which  translate mole hills into mountains.
Just ask Jessicah Schipper, the women’s 200m butterfly world record holder.  She claims that the Speedo LZR she […]

believe it or not

Researchers estimate that it takes 14 power stations to power the Internet.
In CO2  emission terms, they think this is comparable to the airline industry.
There goes my contribution to carbon savings by studiously staying at home surfing the net.
